The NCSF: What you need to know

Choosing an NCSF study package can help you get started with your career in the healthcare field. Each package comes with instructor support as well as a dedicated online portal. As you navigate through the online portal you will receive assistance. If you have questions or need additional assistance, contact your instructor. They will be happy to assist. For continuing education units

Continuing education credits are units earned through continuing educational programs. Continuing education credits are awarded for college courses taken within a specified time frame. These courses must be accredited and a transcript indicating a passing grade is required. Each college credit earned is worth 1 CEU. CEU credits can also count towards professional development activities. These activities include professional presentations, participation in industry committees, and research participation. These activities could lead to individual earning up five CEUs.

The NCSF requires certified exercise professionals to recertify every two years. This is to ensure compliance against current standards, code-of-conduct, and new data. For CEUS to renew NCSF certification, individuals must complete a minimum of 10 continuing education units. An NCSF-approved course can earn continuing education credit. Applicants may appeal to the NCSF if a course is not approved.


Exam fee

Recertification is available through NCSF. Recertification costs $75 for one credential or $100 for multiple. You can submit your online application. NCSF will then process it within 3 to 5 working days. Your credential status will then be updated, and will remain valid up to two years. The recertification package contains a new identification card and updated certificate. It also includes information about future CEUs.

Prometric administers the NCSF test. Online or in-person appointments can be made. Remote access is possible if you have internet. The exam contains 150 multiple choice questions. The NCSF testing centre you choose will affect the fee. For example, if you want to take your exam in the privacy of your own home, the NCSF will charge you a different fee than if you take the exam at the Prometric testing center.

A majority of fitness certifications incorporate basic considerations for training specific populations, such as children, pregnant women, and people with chronic diseases. The NCSF only has one chapter dedicated to the topic. In one 15-page chapter, the NCSF covers only a few special populations - diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and working with children. The rest of the information is just a summary and is not covered in detail. Many trainers have this problem.
